Aston Villa face a fight to sign Yoann Barbet this summer after it emerged two other teams are in the race for his signature.
Barbet will leave Brentford when his contract expires at the end of this month after four seasons with the Bees, with a number of clubs, including Villa, said to be interested in snapping up the centre-back.
According to Turkish outlet Asistanaliz, cited on The Boot Room, Besiktas and Wolverhampton Wanderers are the other sides interested in the Frenchman.
Villa are in the market for a central defender ahead of their return to the Premier League, with Chelsea’s Gary Cahill and Tyrone Mings, who spent the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Villa Park from Bournemouth, just two of the names linked.
Barbet worked with Dean Smith before the boyhood Villa fan left Griffin Park in October 2018 to take the Villa hot seat.
Smith will now be hoping that the 26-year-old defender, who can also play at left-back, will follow in his footsteps and join him in the Midlands.
Four more defenders Villa may target
Mings impressed while on loan at Villa in the second half of last season, cementing a place in the starting line-up straight away and played a big part in the turnaround in form that led to the club’s promotion.
Cahill is leaving Chelsea when his contract expires at the end of this month. A Premier League, Champions League and Europa League winner, the 33-year-old would offer a lot of experience to Villa in their first year back at the top level.
Williams is another player available on a free transfer after being released by Everton. The Welshman has struggled in recent years but could add international and Premier League experience to the Villa squad.
Tuanzebe played 19 times at centre back for Villa last season, and it would have been much more if it wasn’t for injury. The 21-year-old has been strongly linked with a return to Villa Park for the 2019/20 season.
