Aston Villa have expressed an interest in a deal to sign Matt Targett from Southampton this summer.
According to the Express and Star, Villa are ready to launch a move to sign the defender as they prepare for life in the Premier League.
Targett has been in and out of the Southampton side since a promising loan spell at Fulham.
He was only able to make 16 Premier League appearances last season, with Ryan Bertrand very much the first choice when fully fit.
The defender is rated at £10 million and could be allowed to move on this summer if he wants to pursue regular first-team football.
It’s a position that Dean Smith knows he needs to strengthen with Neil Taylor the only senior left-back at the club ahead of their return to the top flight.
The backline is clearly an area that Smith wants to improve, with Kortney Hause also set to join permanently from Wolves.
Full-backs that Villa could sign this summer
If Villa wanted to spend big, they could push for Derby’s young defender Jayden Bogle, who displayed lots of promise in the Championship.
Todd Kane, able to play on either side, would be a useful addition to the squad.
James Tavernier has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League after impressing with Rangers.
Luton Town’s James Justin looks set for a big move this summer after catching the eye in League One. Leicester are very keen to snap him up.
