Aston Villa are looking to add to their squad this summer ahead of the club’s return to the Premier League following a successful Championship campaign.
One of the names to be linked with a move to the Midlands club is Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips, who is said to be of interest to Dean Smith.
However, according to Belgian outlet HLN, Leeds say under no circumstances is the player for sale and that Villa will have to turn their attention elsewhere.
It is claimed that the club will now pursue a deal for Club Brugge’s Marvelous Nakamba, with Phillips looking an increasingly unlikely target.
Phillips made 44 appearances in the Championship last season and is seen as a key part of Marcelo Bielsa plans moving forward at Elland Road.
There is no doubting that Phillips is of Premier League quality but the midfielder wants to stay at Leeds and work alongside Bielsa as they aim for promotion next season.
Villa have already signed striker Wesley Moraes from Club Brugge for a club-record fee and want to get their business done early this summer in what will be an exciting window for the club.
Alternative midfielders that Villa could target this summer
Another player from Club Brugge. He will head to AFCON with Zimbabwe and Villa will be watching the midfielder very closely.
John Obi Mikel
Quickly became a fans’ favourite at Middlesbrough last season and is more than capable of returning to the Premier League. Knows John Terry well and would bring plenty of experience.
Trybull is a defensive midfielder who played 31 times for Norwich last season in the Championship but that shouldn’t stop Villa from trying to snatch the 26-year-old.
The Newcastle man wants away at the North East club and could be a smart addition to the Villa squad with plenty of Premier League experience and at 24, still has a lot more to give.
