Wolves leapfrog Villa in Kalvin Phillips pursuit

Wolves are reportedly leading the race to sign Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, the Daily Star report.

The report claims that the Whites star is still struggling to agree on a new deal at Elland Road, with Aston Villa long-term admirers of the 23-year-old.

Villa had been heavily tipped to sign the holding midfielder ahead of the new season, with Dean Smith keen to bolster his midfield options in front of the back four.

However, it looks like Villa’s rivals Wolves are now leading the race to secure Phillips’ services this summer.

Fellow Premier League side Bournemouth are also thought to be keen on the youngster, with Leeds valuing Phillips at £30 million.

The midfielder is currently away with the Whites on a pre-season tour of Australia, with Phillips playing the full 90 minutes against Manchester United on Wednesday.

It looks as if Villa have now turned their attentions elsewhere, with Manchester City midfielder Douglas Luiz and Club Brugge’s Marvelous Nakamba two alternative holding midfielders Villa look set to pursue ahead of the new campaign.
