Jed Steer has uncertain future at Villa after being dropped

Jed Steer could be on his way out of Aston Villa after struggling for playing time and being bumped down the pecking order by Dean Smith, but he may have to wait until the summer to be granted a move.

Lovre Kalinic will be loaned out in January, so Steer will have to stay put until the season finishes. The 28-year-old has spent most of the campaign as an unused substitute and now isn’t even making the matchday squad following Tom Heaton’s return from injury, so this could likely be his final year at Villa Park.

Steer joined Villa from Norwich City in 2013 and has gone on to make 33 appearances in all competitions, conceding 33 goals and keeping nine clean sheets for the club (Transfermarkt).

He has largely failed to nail down a starting place in seven years at Villa Park, resulting in loan moves to Doncaster Rovers, Yeovil Town, Huddersfield Town and Charlton Athletic, but Steer did get some regular action in 2018/19.

The 28-year-old conceded only 15 goals and kept six clean sheets in 16 Championship games as Villa were promoted to the Premier League in May 2019 (Transfermarkt), but he has been on the periphery ever since.

READ ASTON VILLA VERDICT

Steer has made just one top-flight appearance in 18 months, so he must be considering his future at Aston Villa.

The shot-stopper hasn’t featured in the Premier League this season and is now behind Emiliano Martinez and the 34-year-old Heaton in Smith’s pecking order, so it’s hard to see a way back for him as 2020 draws to a close.

matchday.
