Aston Villa shared a picture on Twitter of Ross Barkley training with the first team ahead of tonight’s Premier League meeting with Manchester City and many fans were understandably very excited.

The 27-year-old has been out for two months with a hamstring injury, but his return finally appears to be on the horizon.

Barkley’s last appearance for Villa came in November’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. Just five minutes into the game, he took a free kick and ended up hobbling off the pitch while clutching his right hamstring. Bertrand Traore replaced the England international and he has been out of action ever since.

Barkley was ruled out for three weeks at the time of his injury but suffered continual setbacks in his recovery. He was tipped to return to action on numerous occasions last month but his comeback failed to materialise.

The 27-year-old has made nine appearances in all competitions for Villa this season and has had a hand in four goals. Smith have been impressed with Barkley’s performances and wants to make his loan move permanent, so his return is fantastic news for the club and fans alike.
