Aston Villa need not worry about Ezri Konsa transfer rumours

Ezri Konsa is having a fantastic second season at Aston Villa and finds himself attracting transfer interest from Liverpool and Tottenham.

However, the Claret and Blues need not fear losing him this summer as the aforementioned suitors are already overstocked at the back.

Liverpool wanted a centre-back in January after losing Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip to long-term injuries and they brought in Ozan Kabak from Schalke 04 and Ben Davies from Preston North End recently. They now have seven central defenders in their squad including Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips once everyone is fit.

Tottenham wanted a centre-back last summer to replace the exit-bound Jan Vertonghen, with Toby Alderweireld seemingly on his way out. However, the Lilywhites went on to sign Joe Rodon from Swansea City to accompany Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier and Japhet Tanganga, so they now have five options at their disposal.

Konsa has been one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League this season, giving away only eight fouls, blocking 25 shots, making 83 headed clearances, winning 47 aerial duels and being dribbled past only three times in 20 games (WhoScored), so it’s easy to see why there is seemingly strong transfer interest in him.

It doesn’t seem likely that Liverpool or Tottenham will lead the race if a bidding war begins in the coming months, though, so Villa fans can rest easy for now as regards the 23-year-old’s future.

matchday.
