On this day (May 27) in 2019, Aston Villa won promotion back to the Premier League. The Villans beat Derby County 2-1 in the Championship playoff final at Wembley, courtesy of goals from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn.
Villa took the lead before halftime when El Ghazi headed home Ahmed Elmohamady’s cross from the right flank. He glanced his header beyond Kelle Roos at the back post to put Villa ahead at the break.
Before the hour mark, it was 2-0. McGinn reacted quickest to a deflected effort from El Ghazi that lofted into the air, beating Roos to an aerial ball into the empty net.
Derby did respond late on through Jack Marriot, volleying a low effort inside the area in the 81st minute after Villa failed to clear their lines from a cross. The West Midlands outfit held on for the victory, however, and won promotion back to the Premier League after three seasons in the Championship.
And after securing top-flight survival in their first campaign back, Villa finished 11th in the Premier League with 55 points from 38 games.
