Aston Villa lost Tom Heaton to Manchester United this summer and have yet to bring in a replacement, but the Daily Mail say Villa may have identified another experienced goalkeeper who could fill his shoes – Wayne Hennessey.
Emiliano Martinez is first-choice between the sticks under Dean Smith and Heaton was his backup, but United signing the 35-year-old leaves a void for another player to fill.
Jed Steer would be a decent option as he’s spent eight years at Villa and been reliable when called upon, but The Sun (h/t TBR) say he could be loaned out to a Championship club this season.
Lovre Kalinic is the next alternative, but Birmingham Live say he could be granted a departure if a third-choice goalkeeper is brought in, hence the interest in Hennessey.
There isn’t a lot of enthusiasm on social media for this story, likely because Chelsea and Burnley’s interest throws a spanner in the works and because he might not get many minutes if he did sign.
Martinez is one of the first names on the teamsheet, so Villa will line up the same way in goal regardless of who signs.
