Emiliano Martinez enjoyed a dream debut season at Aston Villa and went on to win the Copa America with Argentina, but his future at club level is now in doubt after 90min reported interest from an unnamed European outfit.

There hasn’t been a big reaction from supporters on social media just yet, but they may soon worry if the story doesn’t go away. Martinez has been outstanding for Villa, so it would be sad for fans if his stay was short-lived.

The 28-year-old joined on a four-year deal from Arsenal last summer and went on to make 38 appearances in all competitions, conceding 46 goals and keeping 15 clean sheets.

Martinez had a watertight backline ahead of him but was solid between the sticks when called upon. The Argentine saved 76.8% of the 177 shots on target faced and conceded six goals fewer than his expected goals tally, so he was an outstanding acquisition.

It’s hard to argue Martinez is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, so it’s not a surprise that a club in Europe are paying attention. Where this story goes remains to be seen, however.
