Delight on social media with Bailey ‘in contention to start’ against Chelsea

Aston Villa fans haven’t seen much of new signing Leon Bailey as the 24-year-old has been out with a hamstring injury since making his debut in mid-August, but he could return in time to face Chelsea after the international break.

Ashley Preece of Birmingham Live says Bailey, who has made one assist in one appearance for Villa this season, is ‘in contention to start’ at Stamford Bridge on September 11. The news was received well among supporters on social media.

Villa are currently 11th in the Premier League table with four points from their first three games, having lost 3-2 to Watford (August 14), beating Newcastle United 2-0 (August 21) and drawing 1-1 with Brentford (August 28).

Chelsea are no slouches, picking up seven points from a possible nine so far, so Villa will need their strongest squad available. In his final season at Bayer Leverkusen, Bailey scored 15 goals and made 11 assists from 40 games across the board, so fans will be desperate to see the Jamaican international in action.

Dean Smith has used Anwar El Ghazi and Emiliano Buendia on the flanks so far but could be swapping out the former.
