Frederic Guilbert couldn’t be guaranteed first-team football at Aston Villa so he opted for another season-long loan move to Racing Strasbourg. The 26-year-old made the switch on transfer deadline day, so he’s had to wait until after the international break to make his debut.

Guilbert finally turned out for Strasbourg in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Olympique Lyonnais and marked the occasion with a post on social media. The uncapped French defender put up a picture on his Instagram story of him in action at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

Matty Cash has been a regular at Villa ever since he joined from Nottingham Forest last summer, so Guilbert stood little chance of getting opportunities. While supporters will be pleased he’s amassing minutes back in France, Guilbert’s long-term future in England is up in the air as it’s the third consecutive season he’s been loaned out.

The 26-year-old has two years remaining on his deal at Villa Park, but his parent club have a decision to make when he returns next summer as he’ll only have 12 months remaining on the contract.
