Emi Martinez has enjoyed a positive international break with Argentina, keeping consecutive clean sheets in their World Cup South American qualifiers against Paraguay (0-0) and Uruguay (3-0), but he used his social media to mark a different kind of occasion while away with the national team.
There was an incredible mural dedicated to the 29-year-old’s Copa America triumph with Argentina, so he had a picture taken in front of it and signed it too. Martinez looked delighted at the mural and couldn’t wait to post pictures of it on his Instagram.
Martinez has had a fantastic 12 months. Eyebrows were raised when he left Arsenal to join Aston Villa, but he was always insistent it was a step up in his career. The 29-year-old has gone on to make 44 appearances in all competitions for Villa, conceding 52 goals and keeping 18 clean sheets.
Martinez’s club form saw him become a regular for Argentina and he went on to win them the Copa America over the summer, shutting out Brazil in the final. He’s regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, so Villa couldn’t have wished for a better start to his life in the Midlands.
