A lot was expected to Emiliano Buendia when he made the switch from Norwich City over the summer, but the 24-year-old hasn’t been at his best in Claret and Blue colours.

Buendia is without a goal in his last five Premier League games and only made his first assist for Villa in Sunday’s 4-1 defeat to West Ham United, so Gabby Agbonlahor has criticised the Argentine and labelled him an “imposter”.

He told Football Insider: “He scored one good goal against Brentford, he’s done nothing else. I really want to single out Buendia, he’s got to do a lot more. I see him throwing his hands up in the air, not running around, not creating anything, not running with the ball.

“This is not the Buendia that Aston Villa saw play for Norwich, this is an impostor. He’s not doing anything that he was doing at Norwich. When you’ve been brought in for over £30million, you’ve got to show it.

“Dean Smith has brought him in, showed faith in him, keeps playing him. If he starts on Friday he has to put a performance in. He needs to take a look at Jack Grealish’s performances at Aston Villa, he’s been brought in as his replacement and he’s not done it yet.”

Buendia joined Villa for £35m in July and has gone on to make nine appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal with one assist. The 24-year-old has been a regular under Dean Smith without justifying the decision, so his place in the side might be under threat.

Villa are coming off the back of four consecutive league defeats and can’t afford to drop more points when they lock horns with Southampton on Friday. Sunday’s loss to West Ham left them 15th in the table with 10 points from a possible 30, so it’s not been the most convincing start.

Not only do Villa need to buck their ideas up, so does new-boy Buendia. A lot of money was spent and it doesn’t look a wise investment currently.
