Aston Villa sacked Dean Smith on Sunday and already have a shortlist of managers who could potentially replace him. One notable name on the list is Steven Gerrard, who led Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade last season. Fans on social media have reacted positively to the news.
The Gers are currently top of the table and four points clear of Celtic so their title defence looks strong, but things could derailed if Gerrard left mid-season. The 41-year-old has spent three years at Rangers and has three years left on his deal, so Villa would need to pay compensation to lure him away from the Ibrox.
Gerrard’s coaching career began with Liverpool U18s (2017 – 2018) where he oversaw 24 games and won 50% of them. He presided over eight games for the U19s (2017 – 2018) too and won six games in the UEFA Youth League.
He’s gone on to manage 192 games for Rangers since taking charge in the summer 2018, winning 124 times. He’s suffered only 27 defeats and has turned the side into title-winners after years of failure, so Villa could do a lot worse than the Liverpool and England midfielder.
Some fans don’t want to be used as a stepping-stone for Gerrard to gain Premier League experience as a manager before returning to Liverpool, but many support the move and hope it goes through.
