Fans hail ‘brilliant’ news as Aston Villa close in on appointing Steven Gerrard

Aston Villa had Steven Gerrard at the top of their shortlist to replace Dean Smith when the 50-year-old was sacked and Fabrizio Romano says they’re closing in on his appointment.

Gerrard recently led Rangers to their first Premiership title in a decade and currently has the Gers top of the table as he negotiates his exit, so fans on social media are excited to see him returning to the Premier League.

The 41-year-old took charge of Rangers in 2018 and has presided over 192 games. He led Rangers to second place in his first and second seasons at Ibrox before winning the title at a canter in his third campaign – 89 points from 33 games.

Rangers are top of the Premiership with 27 points from 12 games and look good to defend their league crown, but Gerrard clearly feels he can’t pass up the opportunity to manage back in England. He’d like to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool in the future, so his stint at Villa will be somewhat of an audition.

Fans seem optimistic that Gerrard’s appointment could breed success in the Midlands after his impressive work in Scotland.
