Steven Gerrard prepares for his first game in charge of Aston Villa, but he’ll have to do it without Morgan Sanson after the 27-year-old picked up an injury during the international break.

Sanson has yet to make a Premier League appearance this season due to fitness woes, and he’s seldom made the matchday squad either, so fans on social media lamented yet another setback.

Birmingham Live note he was previously out with illness and has since picked up a knock while on holiday in Paris with his family, so he’ll miss Saturday afternoon’s clash with Brighton & Hove Albion.

The uncapped French midfielder joined Villa from Olympique Marseille in January and has gone on to make only 10 appearances in all competitions. Sanson had a difficult task to establish himself due to competition from Douglas Luiz and John McGinn, but his biggest problem has been injuries.

The 27-year-old has made just one appearance across the board this season and has only made the matchday squad in three Premier League games without coming off the bench. Sanson can’t be relied upon and Gerrard will be disappointed not to have him available for his first game in charge.
