Aston Villa have made it two wins out of two under Steven Gerrard after beating Crystal Palace 2-1 on Saturday afternoon and Matt Targett was one of many players to shine at Selhurst Park. The 26-year-old was short of form earlier in the season but has turned things around since Gerrard was appointed manager.

Targett was given a player rating of 8/10 by Birmingham Live for his performance and many fans on social media hailed his contribution in South London. The former Southampton left-back silenced Michael Olise so much that he was hooked in the second half and he got on the scoresheet for the first time in nearly two years – his last goal came in the EFL Cup (January 2020).

Against Palace, Targett played for 90 minutes, had 63 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 84.4% of his 45 passes, made two tackles, blocked one shot, made two clearances and had one shot which he scored from – firing home a low effort from close range after a corner wasn’t properly dealt with.

The 26-year-old has made 13 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal with one assist. He looks rejuvenated under Gerrard and fans hope that will continue.
