Fans on social media react as Aston Villa close in on Lucas Digne
Despite having Matt Targett and Ashley Young at his disposal, Steven Gerrard is strengthening Aston Villa’s left-back position with Lucas Digne – a deal worth £25m has been agreed.
The 28-year-old was a regular at Everton before falling out of favour with Rafael Benitez this season. He was accused of being selfish by the Toffees manager and was granted a departure after being frozen out of the first-team.
Digne hasn’t been at his best this campaign, but fans on social media are delighted with the acquisition. Supporters believe Gerrard can get the best of the French international and feel he’s massively upgraded the defence.
Digne joined Everton from Barcelona in 2018 and has gone on to make 127 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals with 20 assists. The 28-year-old made 15 appearances this season before Benitez bombed him out of the squad in early December.
Digne has missed Everton’s last four Premier League games and leaves on a sour note given he’s all but requested a transfer. Fans appreciate his three years of service but aren’t happy that he wasn’t willing to fight for his place. Nevertheless, the Blues’ loss is Villa’s gain and Gerrard has now captured a second talented player in as many days.
