Kevin Campbell says Ramsey deserves England call-up

Jacob Ramsey has impressed for Aston Villa this season and Gareth Southgate is considering the 20-year-old for an England call-up ahead of March’s internationals.

The Three Lions have two friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Coast as they prepare for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and Kevin Campbell hopes Ramsey will make the squad for the two games.

He told Football Insider: “I would like to see him get a surprise call-up. I think he’s been absolutely brilliant. Aston Villa have been under a lot of pressure this season, losing Jack Grealish and spending big – but they’ve done really well.

“Playing with Philippe Coutinho has helped him immensely – you can see that. But I think he could get even better, he’s capable of more. For Gareth Southgate to have a look at him in the squad is so important – he may not get this chance later in the season.

“It’s a chance for him to make a name for himself on that massive stage and impress ahead of the World Cup.” Ramsey has made 27 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring six goals with one assist. He’s represented England at U21 level and looks to have a bright future for club and country.

The 20-year-old has started 16 of Villa’s last 18 Premier League games, having a hand in six goals, so he’s one of the best-performing players Steven Gerrard has to call upon. And the fact he’s already on Southgate’s radar suggests he can’t be far from getting the nod for the national team.

International friendlies are often used to give fringe players an opportunity to proven themselves on the grand stage, so what better way for Ramsey to show he’s ready for the step-up in quality? Campbell is backing the midfielder to be called up, but time will tell if he makes Southgate’s squad.
