Dean Jones says Villa are looking at Nelsson

Aston Villa currently have Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Kortney Hause and Calum Chambers at centre-back, so they don’t need a fifth defender in the first-team. But with Hause’s future being uncertain due to a lack of playing time this season, Steven Gerrard may need a replacement this summer.

The latest name on the radar is Victor Nelsson, according to Turkish media, a 23-year-old who plays for Galatasaray. Nelsson joined the Super Lig giants on a five-year deal from FC Copenhagen, setting them back only £6.3m. He’s made 42 appearances in all competitions but may be on his way out already.

Villa would like to bring Nelsson to the Midlands, but Gala will no doubt put up some resistance as the 23-year-old has been a regular at the Nef Stadyumu. Newcastle United, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid are reportedly keen on him too, so Gerrard’s men won’t be leading the race for his signature.

Dean Jones confirmed Villa’s interest in Nelsson and believes he would be a smart acquisition due to his £9m market value. He told GiveMeSport: “Victor Nelsson is somebody that is definitely of interest. It’s probably good that they’re looking for players a bit different to all the other names you see linked to all the big clubs.”

It remains to be seen if Villa’s alleged pursuit for the Danish international, but it’s not the end of the world if Gerrard goes into next season with Mings, Konsa, Chambers and Hause.

In other news, Jaden Philogene-Bidace may not join Aston Villa first-team next season
