Aston Villa lost 2-1 at home to Liverpool on Tuesday evening, but Douglas Luiz was one of many players who put in a good performance and can hold his head high despite the defeat. The 24-year-old started in midfield alongside John McGinn and looked more comfortable without having added defensive responsibilities. He also opened the scoring early on.

No Villa player who started had more shots on target, completed a higher percentage of passes or made more successful dribbles over the 90 minutes than Luiz. Only one Villa player made more tackles, only one Villa player had more interceptions and only one Villa player created more chances than the Brazilian international.

Tom Gott of 90min gave Luiz a player rating of 8/10 and called him ‘a real monster’ in midfield while saying the 24-year-old carried his side against Liverpool. Ashley Preece of Birmingham Live gave him a player rating of 7/10 and called some of his passing ‘stunning’.

Samuel Bannister of TEAMtalk gave Luiz a player rating of 8/10 and said he did well to score early on while being composed on the ball in midfield. Tim Nash of iNews opted for a player rating of 6/10.

Against Liverpool, Luiz had 54 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 86.8% of his 38 passes, created one chance, had two shots which led to one goal, whipped in one cross which found a teammate, made two tackles, had two interceptions, made one clearance, had two successful dribbles.
