Steven Gerrard won’t sell John McGinn to Tottenham

Mike McGrath of the Telegraph says Antonio Conte wants to sign Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn this summer, but the Tottenham Hotspur manager may be barking up the wrong tree.

The 27-year-old has made 33 Premier League appearances this season, scoring three goals with three assists. McGinn has made 102 tackles, 34 interceptions, 48 chances and 44 successful dribbles, completing 79.6% of his passes while making 27 clearances.

It’s easy to see why Tottenham would want a player like McGinn, but the Lilywhites don’t stand a chance of signing him. Steven Gerrard called the Scotland international an ‘important player’ for Villa earlier in the season and has only left him out of three of Villa’s 37 league outings.

McGinn has three years remaining on his deal and should trust the project under Gerrard as Villa have high hopes of success to come. Tottenham would have to put up a lot of money to get the Midlands outfit to cash in, so it’s hard to see a deal getting over the line.

McGinn appears to be happy at Villa Park and hasn’t made any suggestion that he wants to leave, so this story won’t go anywhere.
