Aston Villa are on the hunt for another left-back despite signing Lucas Digne in January, as Steven Gerrard wants cover in every position and could be selling Matt Targett this summer.
One player on Villa’s radar is Rangers’ highly rated defender Calvin Bassey. The Gers would prefer to keep the 22-year-old at Ibrox and have requested £25m for his signature, but Pete O’Rourke believes Gerrard’s history at Rangers could aid Villa in negotiations.
He told Give Me Sport: “I think for Rangers, they’ll be definitely trying to keep hold of Bassey, but Gerrard will be hoping his past connections with Bassey can maybe swing the deal in his favour, if Rangers do decide to sell.”
Bassey has made 65 appearances in all competitions since joining Rangers on a four-year deal from Leicester City in 2020, scoring one goal with six assists. The Scottish Premiership side signed the Nigerian international on a free transfer, so they stand to make a giant profit from his sale.
But with Bassey having two years left on his deal, Rangers have time to get the best value for their asset. Villa haven’t shied away from spending money this summer (Philippe Coutinho, Boubacar Kamara, Diego Carlos, Robin Olsen), so they’ll match Bassey’s asking price if they believe he’ll improve the side.
