Trezeguet is closing in on a move to Trabzonspor this summer after falling out of favour at Aston Villa, but the Claret and Blues won’t make back every penny they spent. Villa paid £9m to sign the 27-year-old in 2019 and paid him £32.5k-per-week/£1.7m-a-year in wages, so that’s a total of £10.7m.
Villa have accepted Trabzonspor’s offer of €5m (£4.3m) for Trezeguet, taking a £6.4m loss, but Kevin Campbell believes they’re right to do it if a player is not good enough. The Egyptian international scored just two goals with two assists from 22 games in 2020/21, so the writing was on the wall going into this season.
Steven Gerrard loaned Trezeguet out to Istanbul Basaksehir and he found some form with six goals and four assists in 13 games, so a Super Lig rival wasted little time signing him permanently. Campbell says they shouldn’t worry about making a loss.
He told Football Insider: “If he’s not matched up to the standards Steven Gerrard has set then he won’t have him and he’ll cut his losses. Sometimes players are not playing well and they can’t be bothered, it’s better to just get them out the club and take half the money, get something back for him.
“I don’t know the boy, but he’s a good player. Why he’s not getting games, there must be something wrong. Take a loss and get him out the club that’s what I’d do.” Trezeguet made 64 appearances in all competitions for Villa, scoring nine goals with five assists.
He ended up falling down the pecking order but won’t be regarded as a flop. Trezeguet had some fantastic moments in a Claret and Blue shirt, so supporters will thank him for his service.
