Gerrard could drop Coutinho for Buendia against West Ham

Aston Villa welcome West Ham United to Villa Park on Sunday afternoon and Steven Gerrard has a difficult decision to make in midfield – start Philippe Coutinho or Emiliano Buendia?

Coutinho has been a regular under Gerrard this season, starting two of Villa’s three Premier League games. But the 30-year-old has failed to score or make an assist and was dropped for Villa’s 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.

He returned to the XI in the EFL Cup win over Bolton Wanderers but may be at risk of losing his place again as Buendia has been in much better form. The 25-year-old started against Palace and was only used from the bench against Bolton, so Gerrard might be planning to bring him back for the West Ham clash.

Buendia came on in the second half against the Trotters and grabbed an assist, so he’s contributed two goals from four games in all competitions this season – the Argentine international has created six chances. Villa are 15th in the Premier League table with three points from three games, losing 2-0 to Bournemouth, winning 2-1 over Everton and losing 3-1 to Crystal Palace. Gerrard’s men have scored one or less goals in 66.66% of their outings, so is Buendia the answer?
