  • He will join up with team ahead of the 2026/27 campaign
  • Cissé has enjoyed a superb season with Austrian side LASK

Aston Villa have an exciting player joining them ahead of the 2026/27 campaign in the name of Modou Kéba Cissé. The 20-year-old signed a pre-contract agreement last summer and has spent this season with LASK.

Despite only moving to the first-team midway through the 2024/25 season, Cissé has established himself as a key player at the heart of defence for LASK, helping them in their bid to win the Austrian Bundesliga.

He has started in all 26 of his appearances in the league, scored two goals and provided three assists. For a centre-back, he has a very high goal threat, and standing at 6ft 3in, he is incredibly dominant in the air.

As he prepares to join the Villa squad this summer, there is immense anticipation regarding how his unique physical and technical profile will adapt to the intensity of the Premier League.

Could be a valuable player next season

One of the most compelling reasons why Cissé could be a valuable player for Villa next season is his defensive dominance in the Austrian Bundesliga. During the current campaign, he has won an impressive 64.7% of his duels, a figure that underscores his efficiency in one-on-one situations.

In comparison with Villa’s current centre-backs, in the Premier League, Ezri Konsa has a duel win percentage of 66.4. Pau Torres has 55.8%. Tyrone Mings has 55.2%, and Victor Lindelöf has 64.3%

His aerial ability is another standout, winning 61.4% of his aerial duels, which ranks second highest compared to his future teammates. Konsa has 56.4%, Torres has 53.2%, Mings has 59.7 and Lindelöf has 68.8%.

Although the young Senegalese defender has been playing at a very different level from the Premier League, these stats still show that he isn’t just a youth prospect, but a player who can add value to Villa’s team.

The timing of his integration is also ideal as the Villans continue to compete at the highest level of European football. With the club likely to play in the Champions League next season, the need for a deep and talented squad is once again a priority.

Cissé has been a consistent performer in Austria, becoming one of the league’s future stars. By spending a full season gaining senior experience at LASK, he has bypassed the typical adjustment period for many young signings, arriving at Villa Park as a more finished product than many might expect for a player of his age.

Ultimately, Cissé has all the foundations for a top-level Premier League defender: tall, physically robust, yet very composed on the ball, giving him the ability to initiate attacks from the back.

For a summer where change is expected and the need for young players, Villa already has a gem joining them. Whilst, of course, he will still need some refinement, under Unai Emery, he could become an outstanding player, anchoring Villa’s defence for years to come.

matchday.
