Eleven Aston Villa players have been confirmed for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, up from just four at the last tournament in 2022.

  • Villa are the third most-represented Premier League club, behind Manchester City (15) and Arsenal (14)
  • Just four Villa players went to the 2022 World Cup: Dendoncker, Bednarek, Cash and Martinez
  • Three England players are included, Konsa, Rogers and Watkins, all rewarded for outstanding individual seasons

From four to eleven. The growth is undeniable

The most powerful context for Villa’s 2026 World Cup representation is not the number itself. It is the comparison. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Aston Villa sent four players: Leander Dendoncker and Jan Bednarek representing Poland alongside Matty Cash, and Emiliano Martinez flying the flag for Argentina.

Four years later: eleven players. Seven nations. Three continents. The jump from four to eleven is not simply numerical growth. It is the most vivid possible illustration of what Unai Emery has built at Villa Park since October 2022. A club that once struggled to attract players of genuine international quality now sends eleven internationals to the World Cup, and finishes third among all Premier League clubs in terms of representation.

Only Manchester City with 15 players and Arsenal with 14 send more representatives to North America this summer. Villa sit above Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and every other Premier League club. That ranking tells its own story about where this club now stands in English and European football.

The full list. Villa’s World Cup representatives

Emiliano Martinez (Argentina) — The Europa League final hero heads to North America targeting back-to-back World Cup glory despite his broken finger. The only survivor from Villa’s four-man 2022 contingent and now the most decorated goalkeeper in the squad.

Emiliano Buendia (Argentina) — The Man of the Match in Istanbul. His curling masterpiece against Freiburg was the moment that effectively ended the final. Joins Martinez in Argentina’s defending champion squad.

Ezri Konsa (England) — Rewarded for an outstanding season Europa League Team of the Season, consistent Premier League performances, and genuine leadership across 32 European appearances.

Morgan Rogers (England) — The UEFA Europa League Player of the Season. Three goals and five assists in Europe. The most complete young English midfielder in the game. Heads to North America as one of England’s most exciting attacking options.

Ollie Watkins (England) — Twenty-one goals across all competitions. Two against Liverpool. A century of Villa goals. The man Rogers defended passionately against “ridiculous” criticism. Heads to the World Cup in the finest form of his career.

Youri Tielemans (Belgium) — The Europa League final match-winner. His thunderous volley in Istanbul is already one of the iconic goals in Villa’s history. Belgium’s captain heads to the World Cup in the form of his career.

Amadou Onana (Belgium) — The Belgian midfielder whose injury absences this season underlined his irreplaceable importance to Villa’s system. Heads to North America fully fit and motivated.

John McGinn (Scotland) — The captain. Mr Aston Villa. The man who lifted the Europa League trophy in Istanbul [LINK]. Bidding to become the first Scot to win the Europa League since Gary McAllister in 2001.

Lucas Digne (France) — The experienced left-back brings his Europa League winner’s medal to a French squad targeting their own tournament glory this summer.

Victor Lindelöf (Sweden) — The Swedish captain whose extraordinary midfield transformation across the final weeks of the season [LINK] confirmed him as one of Villa’s most versatile and valuable players.

Evann Guessand (Ivory Coast) — The young forward whose international recognition reflects genuine emerging quality within Villa’s development structure. A future first-team option returning with World Cup experience.

The implications. A condensed pre-season

Eleven players at the World Cup creates specific and significant logistical challenges for Emery’s pre-season planning. The tournament runs through June and into July, meaning Villa’s World Cup participants will return to Bodymoor Heath significantly later than their non-international colleagues. Pre-season preparation will be condensed, staggered, and carefully managed to ensure full fitness ahead of the Champions League qualifying campaign.

Four to eleven. The numbers tell the story better than any words could. This is what a transformed football club looks like and this is where it is heading. Every single one of these players earned their place. Every single one of them will return to Villa Park this summer as a World Cup participant and as a member of the most ambitious and exciting squad in the club’s modern history.
