Youri Tielemans is undergoing his Manchester United medical this Tuesday, moving a significant step closer to completing a reported £35million exit from Aston Villa.
According to Sky Sports News, United have triggered the release clause written into Tielemans’ contract, with the Belgium midfielder travelling to Manchester on Monday evening to begin the examinations. David Ornstein, reporting for The Athletic, said Villa “had no wish to sell” the 29-year-old and had offered him a new deal, but were left with little choice once the release mechanism was activated. Fabrizio Romano reported that the medical got under way on Tuesday morning, with a long-term contract to follow once it is passed.
Michael Carrick Set For Second Midfield Reinforcement This Summer
The move would make Tielemans United’s second midfield addition of the window, arriving weeks after Michael Carrick’s side agreed a deal worth around £50million for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos. Between them, the pair give Carrick two very different profiles to call on through the middle of the pitch.
For Villa, the exit leaves Unai Emery needing to move fast in the middle of the park — this website has covered the club’s growing interest in João Palhinha as a direct replacement, while the numbers behind Tielemans’ three years at Villa Park underline exactly what the club stands to lose.
Villa signed Tielemans on a free transfer from Leicester City in 2023, and he leaves having made 134 appearances, scoring 10 goals and adding 25 assists across all competitions. Once the medical is confirmed, an official announcement from both clubs is expected within days.
