Youri Tielemans has thanked Aston Villa supporters in an emotional farewell message following his permanent transfer to Manchester United.
The Belgium international completed his move to Old Trafford earlier this week after United activated the £35million release clause in his Villa contract.
Tielemans has now reflected on his three years at Villa Park, describing representing the club as a privilege and thanking staff and supporters for making him feel welcome.
“There are moments in football that are harder than any match you will ever play,” he wrote on Instagram. “Saying goodbye is one of them.”
The midfielder said Villa supporters had only demanded “commitment, honesty and heart” during his time at the club.
He added that part of his heart would always remain at Villa Park before ending his message with “Up the Villa”.
Tielemans leaves lasting Aston Villa legacy
Tielemans joined Villa on a free transfer from Leicester City in 2023 and developed into a central figure under Unai Emery.
He made 134 appearances and scored ten goals during his three seasons in the West Midlands. His final campaign included two goals and seven assists as Villa lifted the Europa League.
Manchester United handed Tielemans a five-year contract after completing the transfer. The Belgian said his new club’s ambition to compete for the biggest trophies played a major part in his decision.
His departure leaves Villa needing to replace one of their most reliable midfielders. As Read Aston Villa examined, Tielemans offered far more than goals and assists through his passing range, availability and control in possession.
Villa have moved quickly to strengthen the position by reaching an agreement to sign João Gomes from Wolves.
Tielemans’ move may have disappointed supporters, but his farewell reflects the strong connection he built with the club. He leaves Villa Park with European silverware and a clear appreciation of the backing he received.
