Aston Villa chief reveals major Villa Park naming rights decision

Aston Villa will consider selling naming rights for Villa Park, but any agreement must preserve the name and identity of the club’s historic home.

President of business operations Francesco Calvo has also ruled out leaving the stadium, with redevelopment preferred over building a new ground elsewhere.

Calvo described Villa Park as a “football cathedral” and acknowledged the sensitivity surrounding any commercial change to its name. A potential partner would need to respect the ground’s history rather than replace it with a sponsor-led identity.

Speaking to Birmingham Live about Villa Park’s future, Calvo said the club would approach naming rights differently from agreements he encountered while working at Juventus and Barcelona.

Villa Park would remain part of the name under any future partnership. No agreement is currently close, and the club will not pursue one simply to increase revenue.

Villa Park will remain Aston Villa’s home

Calvo’s clearest message concerned relocation. Aston Villa have no intention of leaving the ground which has been their home since 1897.

Several leading English clubs have moved into newly built stadiums during the modern era, but Villa believe redevelopment offers a better route. It allows the club to improve revenue and facilities without losing the character associated with the ground.

The position supports the strategy outlined when Aston Villa confirmed the accelerated North Stand project. The stand will remain closed throughout the 2026/27 campaign, reducing capacity to just over 37,000 while construction takes place.

Once completed, the work will take Villa Park beyond 50,000 seats ahead of the 2027/28 season and UEFA Euro 2028. New dressing rooms, medical and rehabilitation areas, offices and improved supporter facilities are also included within the wider development.

Read Aston Villa previously detailed the accelerated construction plan, including the temporary loss of matchday capacity. Completing the major work in one season should reduce disruption across the longer term.

Calvo believes a capacity of around 50,000 is appropriate for Villa’s current ambitions. There are no active plans to expand further once the North Stand project is complete.

Commercial growth cannot erase Villa’s identity

Naming rights would provide another source of commercial revenue at a time when clubs are under increasing pressure to grow income away from player sales.

Villa’s progress under Unai Emery has raised sporting expectations, but Premier League and UEFA financial regulations continue to restrict how quickly the club can invest. Increased sponsorship, hospitality and matchday revenue can create more room for spending on the squad.

Calvo has already overseen a more aggressive commercial strategy. Read Aston Villa reported on the club’s record Visit Rwanda agreement, which could reportedly be worth up to £20million per season.

A stadium partnership would be considerably more sensitive. Supporters are unlikely to accept the Villa Park name disappearing in exchange for a commercial payment, regardless of its value.

Calvo’s comments suggest the club understands those concerns. A sponsor could be added alongside Villa Park, but the ground’s established identity would remain visible.

The approach allows Villa to explore valuable commercial opportunities without presenting redevelopment as the first step towards relocation or a complete rebrand.

Villa Park is being modernised because the club intend to remain there. Any naming-rights proposal will need to support that plan rather than undermine the history which makes the stadium commercially attractive in the first place.
