Former Aston Villa striker Gary Thompson has expressed his disappointment after Ollie Watkins was overlooked during England’s World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina.
Watkins remained on the bench as Thomas Tuchel’s side surrendered a narrow lead and suffered a 2-1 defeat in Atlanta.
The Villa striker played only six minutes during the tournament. His sole appearance came late in England’s final group match against Panama.
Thompson believes Watkins could have stretched Argentina’s defence when England were struggling to retain possession and move up the pitch.
“I’m disappointed for Ollie because he never got a sniff at all,” Thompson told BBC Radio WM.
The former Villa forward was particularly surprised when Ivan Toney was introduced instead of Watkins during the closing stages.
Watkins overlooked as England surrendered control
Tuchel initially responded to Argentina’s pressure by introducing defensive players as England attempted to protect their lead.
England completed only four passes during a crucial 19-minute spell before Argentina scored their winning goal, highlighting their inability to relieve the pressure.
Watkins’ pace and movement could have provided an outlet against a defence pushing higher up the field.
The 30-year-old had ended the domestic season in excellent form and scored in England’s final warm-up match before the tournament.
As Read Aston Villa previously reported, that goal appeared to strengthen his claim for a meaningful role behind Harry Kane.
However, Watkins was barely involved once the competition began.
Morgan Rogers started the semi-final and assisted Anthony Gordon’s goal, while Ezri Konsa was an unused substitute after losing his place in the starting side.
Thompson praised Rogers’ intelligence and delivery but also voiced hope that Arsenal’s interest does not result in the attacker leaving Villa Park.
Watkins will now return to Villa having received few opportunities to demonstrate his qualities on the World Cup stage.
