Aston Villa handed worrying Morgan Rogers update after Arsenal move

Aston Villa face growing pressure over Morgan Rogers after Arsenal reportedly decided to accelerate their pursuit of the England international.

Villa have already endured a frantic week, with Youri Tielemans joining Manchester United and João Gomes moving closer to arriving from Wolves.

Unai Emery’s midfield rebuild has progressed quickly, but Rogers’ future now threatens to dominate the remainder of the transfer window.

Fabrizio Romano reports that talks are already advanced on the player’s side and that Arsenal are preparing to increase their efforts.

The journalist stressed that Rogers remains a separate pursuit from Christos Tzolis, with Arsenal always intending to target both attackers.

There have also been no discussions over Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, leaving Rogers as the Gunners’ priority target.

Arsenal prepare to increase Rogers pressure

Arsenal’s interest has now progressed beyond routine monitoring.

Romano’s update suggests the Premier League champions are working to establish the conditions needed to convince Rogers of the move.

However, agreement with the player would not give Arsenal control of the transfer.

There is no indication that Villa have accepted an offer or entered advanced club-to-club negotiations. Arsenal are reportedly preparing an opening bid, but Villa’s valuation remains the largest obstacle.

The Telegraph reports that Villa value Rogers at £130million, which would represent a British-record transfer fee.

That figure reflects Rogers’ importance to Emery, his age and his long-term contract.

The 23-year-old signed a new Villa deal until 2031 in November, leaving the club under no contractual pressure to sell.

Villa remain in control despite player talks

Advanced discussions on the player’s side will naturally concern supporters.

Rogers may be interested in joining Arsenal after their Premier League title win, but Villa still decide whether the move can proceed.

His contract contains no public release clause, while the sale of Tielemans has already strengthened Villa’s financial position.

As Read Aston Villa reported following Tielemans’ departure, the Belgian left for Manchester United after three influential seasons under Emery.

Villa responded immediately by reaching an agreement for João Gomes. Fabrizio Romano’s confirmation of that deal showed the club can act quickly when an important position needs addressing.

Replacing Rogers would be far more difficult.

He can operate from either wing, behind a striker or in midfield. His ability to carry the ball through pressure has become central to Villa’s attacking play.

Rogers also enhanced his reputation during England’s World Cup campaign. His assist in the semi-final defeat by Argentina only increased attention around his future.

Arsenal must meet Villa’s price

Villa’s position is simple.

They do not want to sell Rogers and have protected themselves with a contract lasting another five years.

Arsenal can advance talks with his representatives, but those discussions will achieve little unless Andrea Berta is prepared to approach Villa’s valuation.

Emery has already lost Tielemans and Amadou Onana is facing a lengthy injury absence. Allowing another central figure to leave would significantly weaken Villa before their Champions League return.

The comparison with Jack Grealish is understandable, but Villa’s circumstances have changed since 2021.

Manchester City activated a defined release clause for Grealish. Arsenal have no such route with Rogers and must negotiate directly with a club determined to retain him.

Romano’s update makes Arsenal’s intentions clear. Villa’s response will determine whether this develops into a genuine negotiation or ends with another club being priced out.
