Aston Villa have officially completed the permanent signing of Brazil midfielder João Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 25-year-old becomes the latest addition to Unai Emery’s squad following the arrival of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg.

Villa have not disclosed the transfer fee. However, Fabrizio Romano reported that the agreement is worth up to €45m, with Wolves receiving an initial €40m and a further €5m available through add-ons.

Gomes completed his medical at Bodymoor Heath last week after leaving Wolves’ pre-season training camp in Portugal.

Gomes strengthens Emery’s midfield

The Brazilian arrives after Youri Tielemans completed a £35m transfer to Manchester United.

Amadou Onana is also facing a lengthy spell out with a serious knee injury, leaving Villa needing established midfield reinforcements before the new season.

Gomes brings extensive Premier League experience after making extensive Premier League experience after making extensive Premier League experience after making 130 appearances for Wolves across all competitions.

He joined the Molineux club from Flamengo in January 2023 and quickly established himself through his aggressive pressing, tackling and ability to regain possession.

The midfielder previously progressed through Flamengo’s academy and helped his boyhood club win the Copa Libertadores before moving to England.

Gomes has also earned ten senior caps for Brazil. His energy should complement the technical qualities of Manzambi and Boubacar Kamara in Emery’s midfield.

Villa could still add another player in the position, with João Palhinha and Nico Raskin among the midfielders linked with moves to Villa Park.

For now, Gomes provides Emery with a proven Premier League option as the club prepares for another Champions League campaign.

His arrival completes a deal Villa had prioritised following Tielemans’ departure and continues a major summer rebuild at Villa Park.
