Aston Villa are considering a move for West Ham United winger Crysencio Summerville as Unai Emery searches for a replacement for Morgan Rogers.
Roma have submitted an offer worth around £40m for the Netherlands international, but Villa could attempt to hijack the Italian club’s move.
According to talkSPORT, Villa have identified Summerville as a potential option following Rogers’ £117m transfer to Chelsea.
Manchester United and Tottenham have also shown interest in the 24-year-old, who is expected to leave West Ham following their relegation to the Championship.
Summerville reportedly has a release clause which became active after the Hammers dropped out of the Premier League. However, the exact value of the clause has not been confirmed.
Summerville fits Villa’s attacking need
Rogers’ departure leaves a major opening on the left side of Emery’s attack.
Summerville would provide pace, direct running and Premier League experience. He can play from either flank, although he has produced his strongest performances cutting inside from the left.
The winger scored seven goals across all competitions for West Ham last season before recording two goals and two assists for the Netherlands at the World Cup.
Villa have monitored Summerville for several months. ReadAstonVilla recently identified him as one of the leading candidates to replace Rogers after Chelsea agreed their British-record deal.
The money raised through that sale gives Villa room to enter negotiations, although Middlesbrough will receive a percentage through their sell-on clause.
Roma have made the first significant move and can offer Champions League football. Villa can provide the same European platform while allowing Summerville to remain in the Premier League.
No formal Villa bid has been reported. Their interest still places another obstacle in Roma’s path as Emery begins rebuilding his attack without Rogers.
