Aston Villa have made an enquiry about Marseille winger Igor Paixão as Unai Emery continues to assess attacking additions this summer.
The latest development comes just one year after the Brazilian became Marseille’s record signing.
L’Équipe report that Villa have asked about the 26-year-old, although there is currently no suggestion that an official bid has been submitted.
Paixão predominantly operates from the left and would add another direct attacking option to Emery’s squad following significant changes at Villa Park this summer.
Igor Paixão Aston Villa interest emerges
Paixão joined Marseille from Feyenoord last August after an outstanding spell in the Netherlands. L’Équipe reported at the time that Marseille paid €35million including bonuses for the winger, making him the most expensive signing in the French club’s history.
He made 30 Ligue 1 appearances during his first season in France, scoring six goals and providing five assists. Paixão also produced four goals in eight Champions League appearances.
Villa’s latest enquiry suggests Emery is still assessing ways to reshape his wide options.
ReadAstonVilla reported last week that Villa had a €30million offer rejected for Palmeiras winger Allan, another indication that the club remain active in the market for attacking talent.
Paixão would bring pace, one-against-one ability and Champions League experience, but convincing Marseille to sell could prove difficult given their investment only 12 months ago.
Importantly, an enquiry is still some distance from an agreement. There is no reported Villa offer at this stage, nor any indication that Marseille have decided to make Paixão available.
However, L’Équipe’s report places another established winger firmly on Villa’s radar as the transfer window enters its final month.
