George Hemmings is considered the leading talent from Aston Villa’s latest academy crop, according to BBC Sport, after strengthening his reputation during an impressive pre-season.
Hemmings‘ rise has continued this summer after the midfielder broke into Unai Emery’s senior squad last season.
Hemmings made his first-team debut against Arsenal before making four senior appearances during the 2025/26 campaign. Two of those came in the Europa League, while he also earned two substitute appearances in the Premier League.
The 19-year-old has since been given regular opportunities by Emery during pre-season. ReadAstonVilla reported on Sunday that Hemmings had already scored twice during the summer, with the midfielder describing Villa’s progress as “something to build on”.
George Hemmings Aston Villa reputation continues to grow
BBC Sport reporter Nick Mashiter has now highlighted Hemmings as one of Villa’s most exciting prospects, describing him as highly rated at Villa Park and considered the best of the club’s latest group of academy talents.
His pre-season performances have strengthened that reputation. Hemmings scored against Real Sociedad and has continued receiving valuable minutes alongside established first-team players.
Emery has already shown considerable faith in the midfielder. Earlier this year, the Villa manager described Hemmings as a central midfielder with “huge potential” while explaining why he had been training regularly with the senior squad.
The next decision will concern how Villa continue his development. A loan had previously been considered as a way of providing regular senior football, although his performances this summer have given Emery another reason to assess whether he could contribute at Villa Park instead.
With Champions League and domestic football ahead, Hemmings is making an increasingly convincing argument that he deserves to remain close to the first team.
