Man Utd make major decision over Aston Villa star

Aston Villa have received encouraging news over Ollie Watkins’ future after Manchester United decided they are not expected to return for the striker this summer.

United remain open to signing another centre-forward, but Watkins is no longer expected to feature in their plans.

The 30-year-old attracted interest from Old Trafford last summer before United signed Benjamin Sesko. His name had appeared again this summer as Michael Carrick’s side assessed their options in attack.

ReadAstonVilla reported on 24 July that United could make an official approach for Watkins. At that stage, a move depended on how United reshaped their forward line.

Ollie Watkins transfer stance becomes clearer

The Athletic now reports that United are still looking at the striker market but are not expected to pursue Watkins.

Their interest from last summer has therefore not developed into another approach.

That gives Villa more clarity as Unai Emery plans for the new season. Watkins remains one of the most important players in his attack and has consistently provided goals at Premier League level.

Villa have also explored other forward options this summer, including Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson. However, there is currently no indication Watkins is close to leaving Villa Park.

United could still sign another striker before the window closes. For now, though, they appear ready to look elsewhere.

That leaves Villa in a stronger position with Watkins. Emery can continue preparing around the England international without the immediate threat of another approach from Old Trafford.
