Aston Villa set for João Palhinha talks after Bayern clash

Aston Villa are set to receive an opportunity to hold face-to-face talks over João Palhinha as they continue to push for the Bayern Munich midfielder.

Villa remain strongly interested in the Portugal international, but there is currently a gap between the two clubs over his valuation.

According to Bavarian Football Works, citing Sport BILD reporters Julian Agardi and Nico Linner, Bayern are asking for around €25million for Palhinha. Villa consider that figure too high.

Friday’s pre-season meeting between Villa and Bayern in Hong Kong is now expected to provide both clubs with an opportunity to negotiate in person.

Aston Villa João Palhinha interest remains strong

Palhinha has publicly indicated that he is prepared to compete for his place under Vincent Kompany. However, his representatives are reportedly continuing to listen to potential offers.

The midfielder could therefore consider leaving Bayern if he is not convinced there will be sufficient opportunities available next season.

Villa’s interest makes sense despite the summer additions already made by Unai Emery.

João Gomes has arrived from Wolves, while Boubacar Kamara’s encouraging return from a seven-month knee injury has strengthened Emery’s options ahead of the new campaign.

Palhinha would add something different. The 31-year-old is an experienced defensive midfielder who has already spent several seasons in the Premier League and could give Villa greater physical presence in front of their defence.

The biggest obstacle appears to be price.

Villa are seemingly unwilling to meet Bayern’s €25m valuation at present, but Friday presents an unusual opportunity for senior figures from both clubs to discuss a deal while the teams are in the same place.

A friendly already carrying plenty of intrigue could therefore prove important away from the pitch as well.
