Aston Villa confirm João Palhinha interest as talks begin

Aston Villa have confirmed their interest in João Palhinha as Unai Emery continues searching for another midfielder following Amadou Onana’s serious injury.

Villa have been linked with the Bayern Munich midfielder throughout the summer, but director of football operations Damian Vidagany has now publicly acknowledged that the Portugal international is a target.

Talks are reportedly underway, although no agreement has yet been reached.

João Palhinha Aston Villa interest confirmed

Get German Football News reports that Vidagany confirmed Villa’s interest following Friday’s 2-1 friendly defeat against Bayern Munich.

Speaking to Sport Bild, the Villa executive said: “João Palhinha is a very good player who would fit our plans.”

Bayern are reportedly seeking around €25million for a permanent transfer.

The two clubs have also discussed the possibility of a loan containing an option to buy, but financial differences have so far prevented an agreement.

Palhinha remains under contract with Bayern until 2028, although the Bundesliga champions are open to allowing the 31-year-old to leave.

Another midfield addition would give Emery considerably more security.

Onana faces a lengthy absence, while Youri Tielemans has already joined Manchester United. Johan Manzambi is also unavailable for Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain.

ReadAstonVilla analysed on Friday how Boubacar Kamara’s return and João Gomes’ arrival have already changed Emery’s midfield options, but another senior addition would ease the pressure across a demanding season.

Palhinha would provide Premier League experience following spells with Fulham and Tottenham, as well as a physical defensive presence in central midfield.

Villa’s interest is therefore no longer simply speculation.

The challenge now is finding an agreement with Bayern.
