Lucas Digne leaves Aston Villa for PSG after four-and-a-half years at Villa Park

Lucas Digne has completed a permanent move from Aston Villa to Paris Saint-Germain, bringing an end to his four-and-a-half-year spell at Villa Park.

Villa confirmed the France international’s departure on Sunday, with PSG subsequently announcing that Digne has signed a three-year contract until 2029 and will wear the No.12 shirt.

The 33-year-old returns to the French champions a decade after leaving the Parc des Princes, having previously represented PSG between 2013 and 2015.

Digne departs Villa having made 182 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing 24 assists.

Lucas Digne completes PSG return

Digne joined Villa from Everton in January 2022 and became an important part of the side under Unai Emery.

He helped the club qualify for the Champions League before playing a key role in last season’s Europa League triumph. Digne then represented France at the 2026 World Cup as Didier Deschamps’ side reached the semi-finals.

His departure had been expected for several weeks.

ReadAstonVilla reported in July that PSG had reached a verbal agreement with Digne and informed Villa of their intention to trigger a release clause in his contract. The clause was reported to be worth less than €10million.

Villa therefore had limited control over the fee despite Digne remaining under contract until 2028.

PSG have now completed the move, with the defender returning to the club where he won two Ligue 1 titles during his first spell. The French champions confirmed that his new contract runs until June 2029.

The transfer leaves Ian Maatsen as Villa’s established option on the left of defence, although Emery has been keen to add further competition.

Villa are also closing in on a deal for Atlético Madrid defender Matteo Ruggeri as part of their defensive rebuild.

Digne leaves after more than four years of consistent service and 182 appearances in claret and blue.

For Villa, attention now turns to completing the next stage of Emery’s rebuild before the new season begins.
