Aston Villa news continues to move quickly as Unai Emery prepares his side for Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain.
Villa have made a fresh enquiry about Jonathan David, face competition for João Palhinha and are stepping up preparations for another European final.
Emery still has work to do in the transfer market following significant changes to his squad this summer, particularly in midfield and attack.
Aston Villa news: fresh Jonathan David enquiry
Aston Villa have reportedly made a fresh enquiry about Juventus striker Jonathan David.
Football Italia reports that Villa have sounded out the Canada international’s availability, with a possible loan among the options being explored. Formal negotiations have not yet opened.
David endured a difficult first season in Turin after joining Juventus from Lille, scoring eight goals across the campaign. The Italian club could now consider allowing him to leave as they attempt to reshape their own attack.
Villa’s renewed interest arrives at an intriguing moment in their striker search.
ReadAstonVilla reported on Monday that Endrick currently wants to remain at Real Madrid, despite Villa showing serious interest in taking the Brazilian on loan.
David therefore represents another potential option for Emery as he looks to strengthen the group around Ollie Watkins.
Newcastle add pressure to Palhinha pursuit
Villa also continue to work on a deal for Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha.
The Portugal international is understood to be increasingly interested in moving to Villa Park, but an agreement with Bayern has not yet been reached.
ReadAstonVilla revealed on Monday evening that Palhinha is becoming increasingly keen on the move, while Villa would prefer a loan rather than the permanent transfer Bayern have been seeking.
Competition remains an issue.
talkSPORT reports that Newcastle United are also pursuing Palhinha, creating another potential obstacle for Emery.
Villa need further midfield depth following Youri Tielemans’ departure and Amadou Onana’s serious injury. Palhinha would provide considerable Premier League experience alongside João Gomes and Boubacar Kamara.
His preference could prove important, but Villa still need to find a structure Bayern are prepared to accept.
Villa attention turns towards PSG
Transfer business will temporarily take a back seat when Villa travel to Salzburg for Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup.
The club have begun their final preparations for the meeting with Champions League winners PSG, with the official Aston Villa website publishing its detailed look at Luis Enrique’s side.
Emery’s players know the scale of the challenge.
Matty Cash has already described PSG as the best team in world football, but Villa have recent evidence that they can trouble the French champions.
Their attention now turns fully towards Salzburg, where another trophy is available only three months after the Europa League triumph.
Away from the pitch, however, the transfer picture remains active.
David has emerged again as a realistic attacking option and Villa remain firmly involved in the Palhinha negotiations. Emery could therefore return from the Super Cup with plenty still to resolve before the transfer window closes.
