Lucas Digne Aston Villa reunion talk has become reality after the former Villa defender was named in Paris Saint-Germain’s squad for Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup. Digne only completed his return to PSG on Sunday, but he could now make his second debut for the French champions against the club he represented for four-and-a-half years.
PSG confirmed their 24-man travelling squad on Tuesday, with Digne included alongside fellow new signing Maghnes Akliouche. Luis Enrique’s side have already arrived in Salzburg ahead of the 8pm BST kick-off.
Digne’s presence adds another subplot to an already significant occasion for Unai Emery’s side.
Villa confirmed the French international’s departure on 9 August after 182 appearances in claret and blue. He scored four goals and provided 24 assists after joining from Everton in January 2022.
Lucas Digne Aston Villa reunion comes almost immediately
Few could have expected Digne’s first opportunity in PSG colours to arrive against Villa.
The 33-year-old has returned to the club he initially represented between 2013 and 2015, and PSG have wasted little time bringing him into Luis Enrique’s plans. Their official profile of the defender even highlighted the possibility of Digne winning another European trophy against his former club in the opening game of the season.
ReadAstonVilla covered Digne’s departure for PSG after a spell in which he became one of Emery’s most reliable senior players.
The reunion also creates an interesting selection question for Luis Enrique. Digne has only just begun training with PSG again, while Nuno Mendes is also included in the travelling squad. There is therefore no guarantee the former Villa defender starts on Wednesday.
PSG captain Marquinhos has nevertheless welcomed Digne back warmly. Speaking before the Super Cup, he recalled joining PSG at the same time as the defender in 2013 and described him as both a good player and a close friend.
For Villa, the timing makes Wednesday particularly unusual. Digne was preparing for another season under Emery only recently, but he could now be tasked with helping deny his former team the first European trophy of the new campaign.
