Rangers explore move for £8m Aston Villa full-back after Emery rethink

Rangers are exploring a move for Aston Villa right-back Kosta Nedeljkovic as uncertainty returns over the Serbian’s future.

The 20-year-old has impressed during pre-season under Unai Emery, but another move away from Villa Park is now being considered.

Nedeljkovic has spent much of the past two seasons on loan at RB Leipzig and returned to Villa this summer looking to force his way back into Emery’s plans.

His performances appeared to have given him a genuine opportunity, but Rangers are now considering whether to offer him regular first-team football in Scotland.

Kosta Nedeljkovic transfer interest emerges from Rangers

TEAMtalk reports that Rangers are exploring a season-long loan for Nedeljkovic as Derek McInnes looks to strengthen at right-back.

A permanent transfer or a loan containing an option to buy are also reportedly under consideration, although discussions remain at an early stage and no agreement has been reached.

Nedeljkovic joined Villa from Red Star Belgrade in a deal worth around £8million in January 2024, but has made only 10 senior appearances for the club.

His situation had appeared to change during an encouraging pre-season.

ReadAstonVilla reported on Sunday that Nedeljkovic had worked his way back into Emery’s thinking after impressing during Villa’s summer schedule.

He provided an assist against Indonesia All Stars and has been given opportunities at right-back while Villa assess their defensive options ahead of the new season.

TEAMtalk says Villa continue to regard Nedeljkovic as a player with long-term potential, although Matty Cash remains ahead of him in the immediate pecking order.

That leaves Villa with another decision to make.

Keeping Nedeljkovic would provide useful depth and allow Emery to continue his development at Villa Park. A move to Rangers, however, could offer the regular senior football that has been difficult for him to find over the past two seasons.
