Unai Emery has revealed that Emi Martinez has again told Aston Villa he would like the possibility of taking on a new challenge, while confirming Zion Suzuki was signed with the Argentina international’s potential departure in mind.
Martinez’s future has been uncertain throughout the summer, but Emery’s comments ahead of Sunday’s Premier League opener against Brighton provide the clearest indication yet that a Villa exit remains possible.
Speaking on Friday, Emery revealed Martinez had raised the prospect of leaving last year before ultimately remaining at Villa Park and producing another impressive campaign.
He has now done so again.
Emery told reporters: “This year again, he transmitted us the possibility to have another challenge.”
Unai Emery explains Aston Villa’s Zion Suzuki decision
Villa have already prepared themselves for the possibility of losing their long-standing No.1.
The club spent close to £30million to bring Suzuki to Villa Park from Parma earlier this week.
Emery has now explicitly linked that signing to Martinez’s position, explaining that Villa wanted another top goalkeeper available if the 33-year-old leaves before the transfer window closes.
That adds important context to a situation which had become increasingly complicated.
Read Aston Villa previously examined the unusual goalkeeper dilemma created when Juventus walked away from a move for Martinez, despite Villa continuing with their move for Suzuki.
The Japan international had already been identified long before the transfer was completed.
Villa had been scouting Suzuki for months as part of their Martinez succession planning.
Emery’s latest comments make the reasoning behind that work considerably clearer.
Emi Martinez future remains unresolved
There is still no agreement for Martinez to leave Villa.
Juventus ended their pursuit earlier this month, and no alternative club has yet reached a deal with Villa for the World Cup winner.
Martinez also remains under contract at Villa Park until 2029.
However, the situation can no longer be viewed simply as outside transfer speculation.
Villa know their goalkeeper is open to another challenge and have already spent heavily on a potential successor.
Our latest predicted XI against Brighton has Suzuki starting Sunday’s Premier League opener.
Emery must now decide whether the transition in goal begins before Martinez has actually left the club.
