Aston Villa have completed the signing of Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton in a deal worth up to £30million after finally overcoming two rejected bids for the England defender.
Villa officially confirmed the permanent transfer on Deadline Day, bringing an end to a pursuit which stretched across the final weeks of the summer window.
Harwood-Bellis joins after Villa had already seen two offers rejected by Southampton.
The club’s persistence has now paid off.
Aston Villa complete Taylor Harwood-Bellis signing
Villa first tested Southampton’s resolve with an £18million offer plus add-ons, but that opening Harwood-Bellis bid was rejected.
A second proposal worth £20m plus £4m followed.
Southampton again said no, with ReadAstonVilla reporting that the Saints continued to demand around £30million.
Villa eventually moved closer to that valuation.
Sky Sports subsequently revealed an agreement in principle had been reached for £25m plus £5m, before Harwood-Bellis completed the final formalities and Villa announced his arrival.
Reports also indicate the 24-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Villa Park.
Harwood-Bellis fills Ezri Konsa void
Strengthening central defence became a priority following Ezri Konsa’s departure.
The England international completed his £55million move from Aston Villa to Arsenal, leaving Unai Emery requiring another senior centre-back.
Harwood-Bellis became Villa’s preferred solution despite other options being explored.
The Manchester City academy graduate helped Burnley win promotion to the Premier League before doing the same with Southampton.
He later joined Saints permanently and developed into one of their senior defensive figures.
Harwood-Bellis also has England experience, scoring on his senior international debut against the Republic of Ireland in 2024.
His arrival completes a transfer which had appeared in danger of collapsing when Southampton rejected Villa’s second offer.
Villa instead remained at the negotiating table and ultimately reached the £30m package required to get the deal done.
Harwood-Bellis now joins Ibrahim Mbaye as another Deadline Day arrival after Villa also completed their €55million move for the PSG winger.
After two rejected bids and days of negotiations, Emery finally has his Konsa replacement.
