Aston Villa have reportedly reached an agreement with Amadou Onana over a new contract that will keep the midfielder at Villa Park until 2031.
The Belgium international is currently recovering from a serious ACL injury, but Villa have still moved to strengthen their long-term commitment to the 25-year-old.
Foot Mercato reports that an agreement has been reached over a two-year extension, taking Onana’s stay from 2029 through to June 2031, with an official announcement expected shortly.
Aston Villa agree Amadou Onana contract extension
Onana joined Villa from Everton for £50million in the summer of 2024 and has since become an important part of Unai Emery’s midfield.
BirminghamLive reports that the Belgian has made 72 appearances for the club and scored seven goals since arriving at Villa Park.
His time at Villa has also been disrupted by injuries, with the biggest setback arriving during Belgium’s World Cup campaign this summer.
Onana suffered ligament damage in Belgium’s 4-1 win over the United States and is now facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Read Aston Villa previously reported that Onana could be ruled out for around nine months following surgery, while the midfielder later broke his silence on the devastating setback.
Despite that injury, Villa appear to have made their long-term position clear.
Rather than waiting for Onana to return before addressing his future, the club are reportedly ready to secure him for another two years.
Foot Mercato says the agreement has already been sealed and confirmation from Villa is now expected.
Villa turn attention to contracts after transfer window
Onana is not the only player whose future Villa are working to secure.
The club are also preparing fresh terms for Lamare Bogarde after rejecting Premier League interest during the summer.
That came after Villa decided to keep Bogarde despite approaches from Brighton and Ipswich, with Emery viewing the midfielder as an important member of his squad.
Emiliano Buendía has also entered the final year of his contract, while captain John McGinn has two years remaining.
Villa’s focus therefore appears to have shifted quickly from transfer business to protecting the value and stability of Emery’s squad.
Onana’s situation is particularly striking because there was no immediate contractual pressure.
His existing deal already ran until 2029.
Extending it to 2031 while he recovers from an ACL injury would represent a significant show of faith in a player Villa clearly expect to remain central to their plans once he returns.
