Akane Okuma makes instant Aston Villa statement after 32-shot Chelsea barrage

Akane Okuma could hardly have made a stronger first impression in English football after the Aston Villa goalkeeper produced a superb debut to earn Natalia Arroyo’s side a historic point at Chelsea.

Villa were subjected to 32 shots and 57 touches inside their penalty area at Stamford Bridge, yet escaped with a 1-1 draw as Okuma repeatedly denied the defending champions.

The result gave Villa their first-ever WSL point against Chelsea after 12 consecutive league defeats in the fixture.

And while Veerle Buurman’s late own goal provided the equaliser, Okuma was the reason Villa remained close enough to benefit.

Chelsea’s dominance makes the goalkeeper’s performance difficult to ignore.

The hosts controlled 64 per cent of possession and attempted 32 shots compared with Villa’s seven, according to The Guardian’s report from Stamford Bridge.

Okuma was beaten by Lauren James after 11 minutes following a Villa mistake in possession, but she recovered impressively.

She pushed away Ellie Carpenter’s attempt after the hour mark and then produced perhaps her most important intervention late on when James threatened to restore Chelsea’s lead.

Sky Sports also highlighted Okuma’s late save from James, describing the Japanese goalkeeper as central to Villa securing their historic draw.

It was an extraordinary way for the 21-year-old to begin her WSL career.

Okuma arrived at Aston Villa with title-winning pedigree

The performance should not be viewed completely in isolation.

Okuma joined Villa from INAC Kobe Leonessa during the summer after helping the Japanese club win the 2025/26 WE League title.

Her numbers from that campaign were impressive.

FBref records Okuma making 22 WE League appearances and conceding only 12 goals, an average of just 0.57 goals conceded per 90 minutes.

She had also broken into the senior Japan setup before arriving in England, while the Asian Football Confederation confirmed her move to Aston Villa in July.

Okuma formed part of the significant recruitment drive we examined in our Aston Villa Women summer rebuild analysis.

That rebuild was designed partly to address a defence which conceded 48 league goals last season.

One game is far too early to declare that problem solved.

But this was a compelling first piece of evidence.

Natalia Arroyo already has a major goalkeeper decision

Villa have considerable competition in goal.

Emily Ramsey joined from Everton during the same window, while Ellie Roebuck is also part of Arroyo’s squad. The official WSL Aston Villa squad page lists all three alongside Okuma.

That made Okuma being trusted at Stamford Bridge noteworthy before kick-off.

What happened afterwards made it considerably more significant.

A goalkeeper arriving from Japan had just been dropped immediately into one of the toughest away fixtures in the WSL.

Chelsea produced 32 shots.

Villa conceded once.

And Okuma left Stamford Bridge surrounded by team-mates after helping the club achieve something they had never managed before in the WSL.

Supporters can follow Arroyo’s side throughout the season through our Aston Villa Women hub.

For now, though, Okuma has given her manager an excellent problem to have.
