Aston Villa begin their 2026/27 Champions League campaign against Club Brugge on Tuesday, but how many points will Unai Emery’s side realistically need to reach the knockout stages?
The Champions League league phase gives Villa eight matches to secure their place among Europe’s final 24 teams.
Finishing in the top eight would send Villa directly into the round of 16.
Positions ninth to 24th enter a two-legged knockout play-off, while every club finishing 25th or lower is eliminated.
Two completed seasons of the new Champions League format now give us a useful answer to the biggest question.
Sixteen points has been enough to finish inside the top eight in both seasons so far.
Meanwhile, between nine and 11 points has represented the borderline for reaching the knockout play-offs.
Villa’s complete 2026/27 Champions League fixture schedule begins in Belgium before Unai Emery’s side face seven more opponents across the league phase.
How many points do Aston Villa need for the Champions League last 16?
The clearest target is 16 points.
Villa know that better than almost anybody.
During their 2024/25 Champions League campaign, Emery’s side collected exactly 16 points from eight matches.
Their record was:
- Five wins
- One draw
- Two defeats
- 16 points
That was enough for Villa to finish eighth, claiming the final automatic place in the round of 16.
UEFA’s review of Aston Villa’s 2024/25 campaign confirms they finished eighth after winning five of their eight league-phase fixtures.
The same cut-off appeared again one season later.
Manchester City finished eighth with 16 points in 2025/26 after beating Galatasaray 2-0 on the final matchday.
That means the last automatic qualification place has required:
| Season | Eighth place | Points |
|---|---|---|
| 2024/25 | Aston Villa | 16 |
| 2025/26 | Manchester City | 16 |
Two seasons remain a relatively small sample.
However, 16 points is currently the strongest available benchmark for automatic qualification.
What results would give Aston Villa 16 points?
There are several ways Villa can reach the target.
The most obvious is exactly what Emery’s team achieved in 2024/25:
Five wins + one draw = 16 points
Other combinations include:
- Five wins, three defeats = 15 points
- Four wins, four draws = 16 points
- Four wins, three draws, one defeat = 15 points
- Five wins, two draws, one defeat = 17 points
- Six wins, two defeats = 18 points
Fifteen points could still be enough for the top eight depending on results elsewhere.
However, the first two editions of the league phase suggest 16 should be Villa’s initial target if Emery wants to avoid February’s additional play-off round.
That would require an average of exactly two points per game across the eight fixtures.
How many points do Aston Villa need to finish in the top 24?
Villa have considerably more margin if their immediate objective is simply reaching the knockout phase.
The first Champions League league phase demonstrated how tight the lower qualification line can become.
Club Brugge finished 24th in 2024/25 with 11 points, having won three, drawn two and lost three of their eight matches.
Dinamo Zagreb also collected 11 points but finished below them and were eliminated.
One year later, the requirement dropped.
Benfica grabbed the 24th and final qualifying place with nine points after goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin’s extraordinary late goal against Real Madrid on Matchday 8.
The final knockout threshold so far has therefore been:
| Season | 24th place | Points |
|---|---|---|
| 2024/25 | Club Brugge | 11 |
| 2025/26 | Benfica | 9 |
That gives Villa a useful guide.
Nine points might be enough.
Ten or 11 points should put a club firmly into the qualification battle.
But neither figure can be regarded as guaranteed.
Goal difference and UEFA’s other tiebreakers can become decisive when several teams finish level.
What happens if Aston Villa finish ninth to 24th?
Villa would not be eliminated.
UEFA’s competition format sends teams finishing ninth through 24th into the knockout phase play-offs.
Those 16 clubs play two-legged ties in February.
The eight winners then join the league phase’s top eight in the round of 16.
There is an added incentive to finish as high as possible within that group.
Teams placed ninth to 16th are seeded for the play-offs and are paired against teams finishing 17th to 24th.
Villa avoided that entire stage in 2024/25 by finishing eighth.
That saved Emery’s squad two additional matches during an already congested season.
It also carries a substantial financial benefit, with our Champions League prize-money analysis showing how UEFA rewards both league position and knockout progression.
What fixtures do Aston Villa have?
Villa face eight different opponents, four at home and four away.
Their 2026/27 schedule is:
- Club Brugge (A)
- Fenerbahçe (H)
- Viking (H)
- Barcelona (A)
- Galatasaray (A)
- Paris Saint-Germain (H)
- Borussia Dortmund (H)
- Slavia Prague (A)
The full dates and kick-off times are available in our Aston Villa Champions League fixture guide.
On paper, Villa’s first three matches could become particularly important.
Club Brugge away is followed by consecutive Villa Park fixtures against Fenerbahçe and Viking.
A strong opening would reduce the pressure before the schedule becomes considerably tougher.
Villa later travel to Barcelona and Galatasaray while PSG and Dortmund both visit Villa Park.
Aston Villa’s Champions League points target
Based on the first two seasons of the league phase, the targets can be simplified to:
16+ points: Strong benchmark for a top-eight finish and direct qualification.
15 points: Top-eight contention, but potentially dependent on other results and tiebreakers.
12-14 points: Should put Villa in an excellent position to reach at least the play-offs.
10-11 points: Likely to put Villa around the knockout qualification battle.
9 points: Has previously been enough, but represents dangerous territory.
Eight or fewer: Significant risk of elimination based on the evidence so far.
These are historical benchmarks rather than guaranteed qualification totals.
Every edition of the competition will produce a different distribution of results.
But Villa have already demonstrated exactly what an excellent league phase looks like.
Five victories and one draw delivered 16 points in 2024/25 and carried Emery’s side directly into the last 16.
That is the number to chase again.
