Aston Villa handed double injury concern after Maatsen and Pau forced off

Aston Villa were left with two fresh injury concerns during their 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Villa Park.

Pau Torres was forced off during the first half, with Tyrone Mings introduced in his place.

Ian Maatsen then limped out of the game late on after Villa had already used their available substitutions.

That left Unai Emery’s side with ten men for the closing stages, and Nottingham Forest scored their winning goal moments later through Igor Jesus.

The Times reported that Maatsen limped off in the 87th minute before Forest immediately capitalised on Villa’s numerical disadvantage.

Ian Maatsen injury leaves Aston Villa with ten men

Maatsen had started at left-back as Emery kept faith with much of the side that beat Club Brugge in midweek.

The Netherlands international lasted until the closing stages before being unable to continue.

Villa had already made all of their substitutions.

That meant Matteo Ruggeri could not be introduced and Emery’s side had to see out the game with ten players.

Within moments, Forest found the breakthrough.

Morgan Gibbs-White produced a clever backheel before Igor Jesus converted the winner to condemn Villa to another Premier League defeat.

The injury therefore proved particularly costly on an already difficult afternoon.

Our Aston Villa injury tracker will now need another update ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup trip to Coventry City.

Pau Torres also forced off for Aston Villa

Maatsen was not Villa’s only concern.

Torres was withdrawn during the first half after suffering an injury, forcing Mings into action earlier than planned. Contemporary match coverage also noted Emery having to reshuffle because of the Spaniard’s problem.

That is especially frustrating after Torres produced an excellent performance in Belgium.

The defender registered two assists in Villa’s 3-2 Champions League victory over Club Brugge, as covered in our Pau Torres analysis after the Brugge win.

Villa now face a quick turnaround before travelling to Coventry.

Emery will therefore be hoping both Maatsen and Torres avoided anything serious, with further clarification likely to come from his post-match media duties.
